The comic was created by an Indian American filmmaker, Ram Devineni, in response to the horrific gang rape and murder of a young woman in New Delhi in 2012 (the Nirbhaya case). Positioning a rape victim from rural India as a protagonist with power, it was widely applauded as a means of changing the disempowering discourse surrounding victim-survivors of sexual violence. However, we argue, the comic does not actually center Priya\u2019s experience, and instead renders Priya as marginal in her own story. Although the comic is marketed as promoting women\u2019s agency, in media coverage, Devineni is foregrounded as the agent of change. He is positioned as the perfect diasporic masculine saviour, both respectful of traditional culture and adequately progressive, educated, and modernized. The media spectacle of Priya\u2019s Shakti thus participates in a discursive move to replace the \u201cWhite saviour\u201d with a proxy\u2014the diasporic Hindu masculine saviour\u2014whilst keeping the underlying structures of both Hindu patriarchal power and US imperialism in place.<\/p>\n<p>En este art\u00edculo ofrecemos un an\u00e1lisis cr\u00edtico del discurso medi\u00e1tico en torno a un c\u00f3mic contra la violencia sexual, Priya&#8217;s Shakti (2013), que cuenta la historia de una v\u00edctima de violaci\u00f3n en grupo que se convierte en un improbable \u201csuperheroina\u201d en una cruzada para acabar con la violencia sexual. El c\u00f3mic fue creado por el cineasta indio estadounidense, Ram Devineni, en respuesta a la horrible violaci\u00f3n en grupo y asesinato de una mujer joven en Nueva Delhi en 2012 (el caso Nirbhaya). Posicionar a una v\u00edctima de violaci\u00f3n de la India rural como protagonista con poder, fue ampliamente aplaudido como un medio para cambiar el discurso desempoderador que rodea a las v\u00edctimas-supervivientes de violencia sexual. Sin embargo, argumentamos, el c\u00f3mic en realidad no se centra en la experiencia de Priya y, en cambio, hace que Priya sea marginal en su propia historia.
